Subtotal Distribution is the official U.S. distributor of Thunderbolt Technologies surfboards, and the home of Surf Crime and Part Time Lover Surfboards. From Oceanside, California, we supply surf shops across the country with longboards, mid-lengths and shortboards. They’re designed by world champions, legendary shapers and some of the most stylish surfers to ever paddle out.
Every Thunderbolt Technologies model begins as a hand-built board in Japan, crafted by Yu Sumitomo and his crew. Yu San has been building surfboards for 40 years, and his team brings decades more of experience. Each design is refined until it’s exactly right. Then it’s built with Thunderbolt Technologies construction, so the board you ride feels exactly like the one the designer signed off on.
Thunderbolt Technologies boards have no wooden stringer. Each starts with a lightweight core built with internal carbon or fiberglass flex components, tuned model by model to control flex, twist and rebound. Every board is hand-laminated for consistent weight and feel. The result is lighter, livelier and far more durable than a traditional board, whether it’s a classic log, a mid-length or a shortboard.
Choose from three constructions:
Donald Takayama | Hawaiian Pro Designs
Donald Takayama began surfing and shaping boards as a young boy in Waikiki. At twelve, he left Hawaii for California to work with legendary shaper Dale Velzy. Over the decades that followed, he became a world-class competitive surfer, a master shaper and one of the most influential figures in longboarding. He was renowned worldwide for pioneering high-performance longboards and classic noseriders. He created Hawaiian Pro Designs, and his collection of iconic shapes continues to define his legacy.
Through our new partnership with Donald Takayama’s Hawaiian Pro Designs, four of Donald’s most iconic designs are now built with Thunderbolt Technologies: In The Pink, DT 2, Scorpion 2 and DT Egg. Each is available in Thunderbolt Red and Black with proprietary AVT flex technology. They stay true to the integrity and feel of Donald’s original shapes and add precisely engineered flex, twist, rebound, strength and durability.
CJ Nelson Designs
For more than 30 years, Santa Cruz’s CJ Nelson has kept reinventing his approach to surfing, and he’s still in the conversation as one of the best. His noseriding in Thomas Campbell’s film Sprout is considered some of the most important longboarding of his generation. His style is futuristic but rooted in tradition, and his designs follow the same philosophy: classic heritage blended with modern performance. CJ designs alongside some of the most respected shapers in the world, including Ian Chisholm, Ryan Engle and Darius Gross. Together they’ve built a lineup of longboards, mid-lengths and performance fish, from the Sprout 2.0 and Slasher Low Pro to the Parallax Plus, Outlier and Outlier X.
Harley Ingleby Surf
Australia’s Harley Ingleby is a two-time world longboard champion, winning in 2009 and 2014, and a multiple-time Australian national champion. He’s known for smooth style and the ability to excel in any conditions. Harley’s boards are designed with Billy Tolhurst, who has been shaping for over 50 years. Their nearly three-decade partnership produced the boards behind Harley’s world titles. More recently it has redefined what a performance mid-length can do, with models like the Diamond Drive 2.0, HIHP Speed, Mid 6, Moe and HIBT 3+3.
Skindog Surfboards | Ben Skinner
Ben “Skindog” Skinner held two British shortboard titles by age 13. He went on to become a multiple-time European longboard champion and a perennial threat on the world longboard tour, finishing runner-up to Joel Tudor at the 2021 Malibu event. He’s also a shaper, which puts him in rare company: he designs his own boards and pushes them to their limits at the highest level of competition. His Thunderbolt Technologies lineup includes the Cherry Picker, the OG and Dynamic Double Scoop, the Peacemaker, the Ova and the Hydroplane.
Kai Sallas Longboard Co.
Kai Sallas grew up longboarding at Canoes in Waikiki, the son of a Waikiki beach boy, and qualified for the world longboard tour at 18. He founded Kai Sallas Longboard Co. in 2020 and shapes his own boards. In 2023, after more than two decades of chasing it, Kai won the WSL Longboard World Title at Malibu at age 42, riding a board he shaped himself. He’s also a two-time ISA World Longboard Champion. His Thunderbolt Technologies lineup includes the Mango Jam, Tsunami, Waikiki and Lava Flow.
Surf Crime is the outlaw of our lineup: counter-culture, street-bred and built for surfers who’d rather have fun than follow rules. Every board doubles as a piece of art, with bold colorways and graphics pulled from skate, street and underground art culture. The boards are affordable, good-looking and made to be ridden hard every day, from the Glider and Noserider to the Long Fish, Keel Fish and Stubby. Surf Crime has teamed up with names like HUF and artist Andy Davis, and it’s one of the most popular board brands we distribute.
Part Time Lover is surfing with a sense of humor: art-driven, a little scandalous and priced so everyone can get in on it. Every model is named after a relationship you probably shouldn’t have, including The Cheater, The Cougar, The Babysitter, The Therapist and Swipe Right. Behind the jokes are seriously fun boards, from fish and mid-lengths to noseriders.
Subtotal creates the brand identity, photography, video and catalogs for every brand we carry. That way the shops that stock them have everything they need to tell the story and sell the board.
